The proposal comes as the Supreme Court decision related to executive action remains outstanding.
Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky introduced a proposal to amend the Constitution to rework how birthright citizenship is applied in the United States. The proposal would limit automatic citizenship to children born to individuals who are legal residents, thereby changing the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment. The proposal was made as the Supreme Court considers a case involving President Trump’s executive order on the same issue.
“I am introducing a Constitutional Amendment to end Birthright Citizenship. Under current interpretations of American law, anyone born on American soil automatically becomes a U.S. citizen, regardless of whether the parent was here legally or not,” Senator Paul stated. “This is wrong and not at all the intent of those who wrote the 14th Amendment. We are a country filled with immigrants, and legal immigration is valuable and should be protected.”
The amendment faces procedural hurdles, as constitutional changes require approval by Congress and ratification by states. The issue of birthright citizenship has been debated in legal and policy discussions for years, and the Supreme Court’s pending decision is expected to influence how the matter develops in the near term.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Senator Paul and members of Congress as they consider updates to the interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.
- For Supreme Court justices to evaluate related cases according to constitutional principles.
- For the safety of agents and officers serving in federal immigration enforcement agencies.
